Itchy feet! After 7 months without going on a cycling trip, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to fly to Portugal and escape the rainy grey blanket that covers Germany every winter.
Unfortunately, it ended in disaster in the hospital. Blood clots in both sides of my lung and a monster thrombus in my right thigh. put me in the hospital for an estimated 2 months.

Kribbeln in den Beinen. Nach 7 Monaten ohne eine Radtour musste ich weg. Ich wollte die graue nasse Decke über Deutschland einfach entfliehen.
Leider endete diese Reise als Desaster. Wegen Schmerzen und Schwäche bin ich schnellstens zur Notaufnahme im Alice Hospital in Darmstadt, wo die Ärzte sagten. “So ein riesiger Thrombus überlebt keiner.” Unkraut vergeht nicht :-) Dazu waren beidseitig massive Embolien in meiner Lunge. Keine Ahnung wie das passieren konnte. Schon 3 Wochen im Krankenhaus danach 6 Wochen Reha. Bleibt lieber jung und fit.

My son, Chris, wanted to check out the surf on the west coast of Portugal, so I decided to drive down and ride my e-bike on the same coast. It was a good trip, and I fell in love with Porto - a wonderful city.

Mein Sohn, Christian, wollte auf den Wellen an der Kuste von Portugal surfen, daher habe ich entschieden darunter zu fahren und auch eine E-Bike Tour machen. Sie war eine gute Reise und ich habe mich in Porto verliebt - eine sehr schöne Stadt.

After a serious bout of pneumonia disabled me completely for 2 months, I was sent to a clinic on the North Sea for rehabilitation. During the 1st week, I could do little, but the 2nd thru the 5th week, I increased my daily cycling from 5 km to a maximum of 48 km during the last week. Of course, I took my camera along with me.

Nach einer ernsthaften Lungenentzündung, die mich 2 Monate lang flach gelegt hatte, wurde ich nach St. Peter-Ording an der Nordsee geschickt, um mich zu erholen. In der 1. Woche konnte ich wenig tun, aber von der 2. bis 5. Woche bin ich jeden Tag etwas weiter geradelt. Von 5 km am 1. Tag auf 48 km in der letzten Woche. Klar name ich mein Fotoapparat mit.

2014 was a year of illness for me, so the doctors sent me to an island in the North Sea on the border to Denmark where I could recover and breathe comfortably again. After spending 4 weeks in a rehabilitation clinic there, I decided to ride my bicycle back to my home.
Since my computer crashed, I still haven’t gotten all the photos from that trip entered into my Web site. Please be patient until I have enough time to do it.

2014 war ein Jahr beladen mit Krankheit für mich. Daher haben die Ärzte mich nach Sylt an der Grenze zu Dänemark zu einer Kurklinik wo ich mich erholen konnte. Nach 4 Wochen habe ich entschieden mit dem Rad wieder nach Hause zu fahren.
Nach einem Computer Sturz habe ich immer noch nicht alle Fotos von der Reise auf meiner Website. Ich bitte um Geduld bis ich die Zeit dazu habe.

This trip through the desert of Eastern Oregon was the most uncomfortable trip I have every made. The heat was unbearable and otherwise easy mountains to ride up seemed endless. When the energy is sapped from the body, even the easiest tasks seem difficult. Regardless of the discomfort, the beauty of the desert is unforgettable. At least once in the life of a long-distance cyclist, a ride through a desert is a must.

Diese Reise durch die Wüste in Ost-Oregon war die unbequemste Reise, die ich je gemacht habe. Die Hitze war kaum vertragbar und sonst einfache Berge schienen fast unmöglich zu bewältigen. Als die Energie vom Körper ausgesaugt wird, auch die einfachsten Aufgaben scheinen schwierig. Trotz die Unbequemlichkeiten ist die Schöne der Wüste unvergesslich. Mindestens einmal im Leben eines Radwanderers sollte man durch eine Wüste radeln.

Health trip to the coast of Western France. As a severly handicapped asthmatic, there are times when I must escape the extreme discomfort of the heat and high humidity that comes in the summer. With temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit, I had no choice but to travel to a cooler area. This trip was perhaps the most beautiful I have made during the hot season in Germany. Here, on the coast of France, the temperatures were typically 75 degrees and the salt air from the Atlantic Ocean had a healing effect on my ailing lungs.

Gesundheits-Reise zur Westküste in Frankreich. Als schwerbehinderter Asthmatiker gibt es Jahreszeiten, wo ich die extreme Hitze und hohe Luftfeuchtigkeit im Sommer entfliehen muss. Mit Temperaturen über 40 Grad hatte ich keine Wahl als zu einer kühleren Gegend zu fahren. Diese Reise war vielleicht die Schönste die ich in der heißen Jahreszeit jemals gemacht habe. Hier, an der Küste von Frankreich waren die Temperaturen um die 25 Grad. Die Salzluft hatte eine heilende Wirkung auf meine kranken Lungen.

My second trip to Romania was planned a year in advance. But nothing ever goes according to plan. It was a great joy to see my old friends, Maria-Magdalena, Anca, Bogdan, Cristina, Laici and Malina, and to meet new friends - Dan, Gabriela, Cristina - and to travel through Transylvania and Romanian Moldavia. As always, it was a super adventure. I can hardly wait to return there again.

Meine zweite Reise nach Rumänien wurde vor einem Jahr geplant. Aber nichts geht nach Plan. Ich habe es genossen, meine alte Freunde zu besuchen, Maria-Magdalena, Anca, Bogdan, Cristina, Laici, Malina, neue Freunde kennen zu lernen - Dan, Gabriela, Cristina in Sibiu - und durch Siebenbürgen und rumänische Moldawien. Wie gewöhnlich - war es ein super Abenteuer.

This cycling tour is the first I made with my brother, Rick, who lives in Oregon USA.
With snow on the ground in Germany, we flew to Jerez de la Frontera in Andalucia and then rode the bicycles along the Atlantic coast to Sagres in the southwest corner of Portugal.

Dieses Radwandertour habe ich als erstes Tour mit meinem Bruder, Rick, der in den USA lebt. Mit Schnee auf dem Boden sind wir von Deutschland nach Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusien geflogen. Von dort aus gings an der Atlantikküste bis Sagres in der Südwest Ecke von Portugal.

The first time I took this trip was in 1967 in a VW bug. The next time was in a tourist boat. On a bicycle, I could stop anywhere I wanted and for as long as I wanted. Unfortunately, the sun didn’t shine a lot on this tour, but it was nice to see all the castles again.

Das erste Mal, dass ich diese Radtour gemacht hatte war in einem VW Käfer in 1967. Das nächste mal in einem Touristenboot. Mit einem Fahrrad konnte ich überall halten und einige Zeit verweilen. Leider war nicht ganz so viel Sonne, wie ich gehofft hatte, aber es war schön die ganze Schlösser wieder zu sehen.

For several years I wanted to ride the bike along the Lahn River. This trip included a few ups and downs and once I had to put up the tent in a hurry because of the rain. But it was a beautiful trip along a river that is not well known.

Mehrere Jahre lang wollte ich den Lahn Radweg fahren. Diese Radwanderung hatte eine Höhen und Tiefen - einmal musste ich das Zelt kurz vor einem Regen aufbauen. Aber es war eine sehr schöne Reise auf einem Fluss, der ziemlich unbekannt ist.

The Danube River begins in the Black Forest of Germany, goes through 7 countries and flows into the Black Sea in Romania. One would think that traveling along a large river would be a flat ride, but in this case, you would be sadly mistaken. As you can see in this photograph on the border between Serbia and Romania, there are many hills and cliffs that have to be cycled and in the eastern countries, there are often no cycling trails, so the road must be shared with cars and trucks. It was not an easy tour, but because of the many people I met on the way, it was by far, the most interesting adventure I have experienced. The grand finale was to meet with nice friends I had met along the way for a wonderful 4 days on the beach at Vama Veche, Romania.

Die Donau fängt im Schwarzwald in Deutschland an, fliesst durch 7 Ländern bis zum Schwarzen Meer in Rumänien. Man könnte sich vorstellen, das an einem Fluss zu radeln eine angenehme flache Tour sei, aber in diesem Fall, läge man völlig falsch. Wie man auf diesem Foto an der Grenze zwischen Rumanien und Serbien sehen kann gibt es viele Berge und Klippen zu überwinden, und in den östlichen Ländern gibt es oft keine Radwege. Daher muss man zusammen mit PKWs und LKWs die Strasse teilen. Diese war keine einfache Tour, aber wegen den vielen netten Leuten, die ich unterwegs kennengelernt hatte, war diese Tour weitaus, das interessanteste Abenteuer, das ich je erlebt hatte. Die grosse Finale war mich mit lieben Freunden, die ich unterwegs kennengelernt hatte, in Vama Veche am Schwarzen Meer 4 schöne Tage zu verbringen.

This trip was a fascinating along the coast of Sicily. Beginning in Catania, I pedaled south to Augusta, Syracusa, Avola, then across to Pozzallo not far from the Island of Malta, through Gela then to Agrigento, an ancient Greek city with the best preserved Greek temples I’ve ever seen. From there, north to Palermo, then along the north coast to Messina and south again to Catania, a city that is filled with memorials from the Roman empire.

Diese Kurzreise war faszinierend und ging vom Flughafen in Catania Richtung Süden nach Augusta, Syracusa, und Avola - dann weiter nach Pozzallo, nicht weit von Malta, und weiter durch Gela nach Agrigento, eine alte griechische Stadt, mit den am besten präservierte griechische Tempel, die ich je gesehen habe. Von dort aus ging’s nach Palermo, dann an der Nordküste entlang nach Messina und dann wieder nach Catania, eine Stadt die mit Denkmäler und Gebäuden von dem alten Römischen Reich.

Just north of Hanau, there is an old rail line that has been converted into a cycling path. Starting from my home, south of Hanau, this trip took me first to Altenstadt, then 35 kilometers uphill over the top of the Volgelsberg (from 550 feet altitude to nearly 2000 feet) then back down to the Fulda River. From there, northward past the city of Bad Hersfeld and Kassel to Hann-Münden and on to the home of a friend of mine - the best man at my wedding. .

Gerade nördlich von Hanau gibt es eine alte Bahnlinie, die in einen Radweg umgewandelt wurde. Von meinem Haus aus, südlich von Hanau, diese Reise hat mich zunächst nach Altenstadt, dann 35 Kilometer bergauf über den Vogelsberg (von 175 Meter Höhe bis 650 Meter) dann wieder bergab zum Fulda Fluss. Von dort aus, Richtung Norden über Bad Hersfeld und Kassel bis Hann-Münden und dann zu einem Freund von mir - der Trauzeuge bei meiner Hochzeit.

I made this trip for my son, Christian, who is teaching English in Burma. Temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit were not unusual. Traffic, bugs, mosquitos, snakes, alligators and spiders plagued me from start to finish, but it was still one of the most interesting cycling tour I’ve ever made.

Diese Reise habe ich für meinen Sohn, Christian, gemacht, der jetzt Englisch in Birma lehrt. Temperaturen über 37 Grad Celsium waren altäglich. Vehrkehr, Käfer, Mücken, Schlangen, Alligatoren und Spinnen haben mich von Anfang bis Ende. Trotzdem, war diese Radwandertour eine von den schönsten, die ich gemacht habe.

After struggling with my lungs in June and July, my pulmonologist prescribed 3 weeks at high altitude. Livigno lies between 5900-6500 feet - perfect!
By the way, if you smoke, please consider reducing the number of cigarettes or even stopping before something happens to you that is irreversible. I wouldn’t want any of you to go through the pain that comes as a result of inhaling too much smoke. In my case, it was passive. I was forced to work in a government office where others were smoking. Eventually, it was too late.

Nachdem ich in Juni und July mit meinen kaputten Lungen gekämpft hatte, hat mein Lungenfacharzt mir eine 3-wöchigen Aufenthalt im Hochgebirge verschrieben. Livigno liegt zwischen 1700-1900 Meter - Perfekt!
Übrigens, wenn Du rauchst, denke darüber nach, die Zahl von Zigaretten am Tag zu reduzieren oder sogar aufzuhören, bevor etwas passiert, dass nicht mehr rückgängig gemacht werden kann. Deine Gesundheit wird sich bedanken!

Why two names? The Netherlands means the lower lland and includes about half of the country which is above sea level. Holland means “empty land” which is the land that was surrounded by dikes; in this land, the water was pumped out. Holland is the land below sea level. Of course, you expect to see lots of windmills, and there are plenty, but Holland is a lot more than just windmills and tulips. Click on the picture to see more.

Warum zwei Namen? Niederlande bedeutet das niedrige Land und ist etwa die Hälfte von dem Land, das über dem Meeresspiegel ist. Holland bedeutet “hohles Land” und ist das Land unter dem Meeresspiegel, dass mit Deichen umgeben ist und das Wasser vom Meer wurde ausgepumpt. Natürlich erwartet man viele Windmühlen, die gibt es auch, aber es gibt viel mehr in Holland als Windmühlen und Tulpen. Klick auf das Foto, um mehr zu sehen.

The last long cycling tour I made was 8 months earlier, so I was itching for another chance to relax away from the sneezing and teary eyes. The pollen count in Germany was so high in April that I hopped on the first available plane to Mallorca and enjoyed the clean, pollen free air of an island in the Mediterranean Sea.
Although Mallorca is known for its wild parties near the beach of Palma, I was only interested in enjoying the beauty of nature, and Mallorca has plenty to offer.

Die letzte längere Radtour, die ich gemacht hatte war in August 2008, daher juckte es mir, wieder auf’s Rad zu steigen, Relaxen war einfach weg vom Pollen und Niesen und wässerige Augen, die es in Deutschland zu dieser Jahreszeit gibt. In April, bin ich ins erste Flugzeug nach Mallorca gestiegen, und habe die saubere, pollenfrei Luft des Mittelmeeres genossen.
Obwohl Mallorca bekannt ist für Ballermann und andere Orte, wo wilde Parties gefeiert werden, hatte ich nur Interesse an die Schönheit der Natur -- und Mallorca hat in dem Bereich viel zu bieten.
