LIVIGNO

Where is Livigno? Livigno (Romansh: Livign) is a city that lies at approximately 1900 meters in the high Alps. It belongs the province of Sondrio in the region of Lombary, Italy, but it is located physically inside Switzerland near the border to Austria. Trepalle, a small village to the East that belongs to Livigno, is considered to be Europe’s highest inhabited parish. The Spöl river, which flows through Livigno, does not flow into the Mediterranean, but rather into the Black Sea.

Wo ist Livigno? Livigno ist eine Stadt, die auf ca. 1900 Meter liegt in den Hochalpen. Sie gehört zur Provinz Sondrio im Gebiet von Lombary, Italien, liegt aber innerhalb der Schweiz in der Nähe der Grenze zu Österreich. Trepalle, ein kleies Dorf Richtung Osten, ist Europas höchster Gemeinde. Die Spöl, ein Fluss der durch Livigno fliesst, mündet nicht ins Mittelmeer, sondern ins Schwarzen Meer. 

Livigno lies in a beautiful valley with a lake that is 15 kilometers long to the north. In the winter, it is a ski resort. In the summer, it is a favorite valley for summer sports and it is especially popular for mountain bikers. In 2005, the World Mountainbike Championships were held here. Some of the trails are so steep that I found myself pushing my bike up parts of them. Of course, the most fun is in riding down and flying over the bumps along the way -- somewhat like skiing over moguls.

Livigno liegt in einem wunderschönen Tal mit einem 15-km langen See am Ende. Im Winter ist Livigno ein Ski Paradies. Im Sommer ist dieses Gebiet ein Lieblingstal für Sportler(innen) und ist besonders beliebt von Mountainbikern. In 2005 wurden die World Mountainbike Championships hier veranstaltet. Die Wege sind teilweise so steil, dass ich oft mein Rad bergauf schieben müsste. Danach, freue ich mich schnellstens hinunter zu fahren - etwas wie Skifahren auf einem Huppelweg.

Many people come here to go shopping -- everything in the valley is duty free -- and others come for sport.Hiking, cycling, Nordic walking, cross country skiing (even in summer on roll boards), photography are favorites here. Others, like myself, come for the clear air and to resolve problems with their lungs. _When I arrived at the end of a mountain trail yesterday, an Italian man took a deep breath and said, ”Aria pura!” (Pure air!”) A trip down the mountain the day before to Tirano made me understand - there was too much smog even in that small city.

Viele Leute kommen hier um einzukaufen -- alles hier ist Zollfrei. Andere kommen wegen Sport. Wandern, Radfahren, Nordic Walking, Ski Langlauf (auch im Sommer auf Rollboards), und Fotografieren sind alle Lieblingsaktivitäten hier. Gestern, am Ende eines Radwegs hoch im Gebirge, sagte ein Italiener “Aire Pura” Eine kurze Reise ins Tal, und man versteht warum. Da unter war viel Smog - auch in der Kleinstadt Tirano.

So what is there to see in the mountains near livigno? Many things! Flowers are one of my favorite things.

Was gibt’s denn auf den Bergen bei Livigno zu sehen? Vieles! Blumen gefallen mir besonders.

Several years ago, when I took a photography coure, I was told not to photograph objects, but rather light. Here is my attempt.

Vor vielen Jahren, als ich ein Kurs in Fotografie teilgenommen habe, wurde mir gesagt ich solle nie ein Objekt fotografieren, sondern Licht. Hier ist mein Versuch!

As you might imagine, I asked all these fellows to pose for these pictures.

By far, the most rewarding part of hiking to the top of a mountain is to be able to see the beauty from a distance. 

Bei Weitem, das Lohnendste am Wandern in den Bergen ist die Schönheit der Landschaft von Ferne zu betrachten.

An infrequent phenomenon, the sun was rising as the moon was setting on this beautiful August morning.

On my last day in Livigno, I hiked into a valley early in the morning at the suggestion of personnel from the tourist bureau and was rewarded with the sighting of several animals. To the right are 6 ibex that I spotted relaxing in the sun. Can you find them all? They are sometimes very difficult to spot.

Am letzten Tag in Livigno, bin ich auf Rat vom Touristenbüro Personell in ein Tal sehr früh morgens gewandert, und wurde mit mehreren Fotos von Bergtieren gelohnt. Rechts sind 6 Steinböcke, den ich in der Entfernung gesehen habe. Kannst Du sie alle finden? Manchmal sind sie sehr schwierig zu sehen.

Far in the distance, the glacial Bernina mountains are spectacular. But the highlight of the day was when I spotted a bearded vulture-eagle (gypaetus barbatus) high above the mountain peaks as it soared gracefully over the peaks.

Weit in der Ferne sind die Bernina Gletscherberge besonders Spektakulär. Aber die Krönung des Tages kam als ein Lammergeier (gypaetus barbatus) graziös über meinen Kopf segelte.

In Wikipedia, the bearded vulture-eagle (or Lammergeier) is an old world vulture, that breeds on crags in high mountains in southern Europe, Africa, India and Tibet, laying one or two eggs in mid-winter which hatch at the beginning of spring. The bearded vulture-eagle has been successfully re-introduced into the Alps, but is still one of the rarest raptors in Europe. Unlike most vultures, the Lammergeier does not have a bald head. This huge bird grows up to 4 feet long, has a wing-span of up to 9 feet and weighs as much as 15 pounds.
