This stretch of the Danube River was surprisingly wider than before. At Ehingen, the Danube split into two streams -- one going to the north and another going northeastward. Several additional small streams entered the branch of the river that goes northward, and where they come together, one can clearly see the difference in color of the two streams where they merge. 

After Pierre departed for his trip to Bratislava, a team of cyclists from Bulgaria greeted me on the city square in front of the tall cathedral. The Ulmer Münster boasts of having the tallest church tower in the world. Below you can see how it towers high above the rooftops of the city. I climbed the tower once many years ago, but did not venture to attempt it again. I still remember the cramps in my wobbly legs when I returned to street level.

Diese Strecke der Donau war überraschend breiter als vorher. In Ehingen die Donau spaltet sich in zwei Ströme; eine geht Richtung Norden und die andere nordostwärts. Mehrere Bäche fliessen in die Donau, die nach Norden geht und wo sie zusammen fliessen kann man deutlich zwei verschiedene Farben in der dann breiteren Donau.

Nachdem Pierre seine Reise weiter nach Bratislava fortgesetzt hatte, eine Mannschaft von Radwanderer aus Bulgarien begrüsste mich am Platz vor der Münster in Ulm. Die Kirche dort hat den höchsten Kirchturm der Welt. Im Foto unten sieht man wie der Turm hoch über den Dächern der Stadt steht. Den Turm hatte ich vor vielen Jahren gestiegen, aber ich wollte diesen Weg nicht noch mal versuchen. Ich erinnere mich immer noch wie meine wacklige Beine sich dann gekrampft waren als ich endlich wieder unten ankam.

Soldiers’ Homes

Quarters for Soldiers: The top of the wide double city wall built in 1316 was used in 1610 as the foundation for “Grabenhäuser” (quarters) for selected soldiers. In the 19th century, the parapets were removed and one after another, the homes were enlargened to rest on the side of the wall that was previously defense position. 

Soldatenhäuser: Die Doppelstadtmauer von 1316 wurde ab 1527 zum Stadtmauerwall umgebaut. An seine starke Mauerbrustwehr wurden 1610 die “Grabenhäuser” für geworbene Stadtsoldaten angebaut. Im 19. Jh. wurde die Brustwehr Zug um Zug abgebrochen und die Häuschen grabenseitig erweitert.

Shortly after Weltenburg, the bike trail ended and I was forced to take a ferry through the deepest section of the Danube River. As you can see in this photograph, both sides of the river are lined with high cliffs. The ferry ride ended in Kehlheim -- about 5 kilometers downstream where the Altmühl River flows into the Danube.

Bei Weltenburg endet der Donauradweg. Daher musste ich auf einer Fähre die tiefste Stelle der Donau überqueren. Wie man sehen kann sind hier hohe Klippen auf beiden Seiten der Donau. Die Fähre endet in Kehlheim, circa 5 Kilometer flussabwärts, wo der Altmühl in die Donau hinein fliesst.

The next morning, I made my way down the Danube past Regensburg to a place called Walhalla, a structure built by King Ludwig I that resembles the Parthenon in Greece. Valhalla, in Nordic Mythology, was the “hall of the slain” for the gods of the north. Legend has it, that those who were slain in battle that made it back to Valhalla were brought back to life again.

Am nächsten Morgen bin ich an der Donau an Regensburg vorbei nach Walhalla gefahren. Walhalla wurde von König Ludwig I gebaut und sieht dem Parthenon in Griechenland ähnlich. In Nordische Mythologie, Walhalla war die “Halle der Töteten” für die nordische Götter. Der Legende nach, alle die im Kampf getötet wurden, die es geschafft haben nach Valhalla zu kommen, wieder lebendig gemacht wurden.

When I stopped at this beer garden in the park east of Ulm, a lovely waitress; Mariana, approached me and was interested in my bicycle that was still loaded heavily with the panniers and other luggage. Mariana (see photo below) was fascinated by the idea of traveling by bicycle from place to place and asked many questions about cycle touring. Eventually, she asked me where I sleep at night. “That is part of the adventure.” I answered, “I never know where I am going to sleep until I put up my tent at night.” Ulm has no campsites and so I was considering finding a B&B for the night. There were few customers in mid-afternoon, so Mariana began to suggest inexpensive places I could stay - a hotel in Neu-Ulm, a boarding house, etc. Then, she said, “Why don’t you just put up your tent right here in the beer garden?” Her mother and father had no objections, so that’s where I spent the night. Of course, Mariana received an extra large tip for serving me the meal that evening before I went to sleep. 

Als ich einen Salat bei diesem Biergarten im Park östlich von Ulm bestellen wollte, eine schöne Kellnerin, Mariana, ist zu mir gekommen und war sehr interessiert in meinem Fahrrad, das vollgeladen mit Gepäck war. Mariana (siehe Foto unten) war fasziniert über Radwandern von Ort zu Ort, und hat mich viele Fragen darüber gestellt. Nach einigen Minuten hat sie mich gefragt wo ich nachts schlafe. “Das ist ein Teil des Abenteurs, “ antwortete ich. “Ich weiss nie wo ich schlafen werde bis ich mein Zelt aufbaue.” Ulm hat keine Campingplätze und daher hatte ich mir überlegt, ob ich eine Pension für die Nacht aufsuche. Es gab wenige Kunden mitten im Nachmittag, daher hat Mariana angefangen günstige Möglichkeiten zu benennen -- ein Hotel in Neu-Ulm, einige Pensionen, usw. Dann sagte sie, “Warum schläfst Du nicht einfach hier - im Biergarten?” Platz genug für ein Zelt ist da drüben in der Ecke.” Ihre Mutter und Vater hatten nichts dagegen, daher habe ich die Nacht dort verbracht. Natürlich hat Mariana ein grosszügiges Trinkgeld am Abend als sich mich servierte, bevor ich dann ins Zelt verschwunden war.

And the Winner is.....

Going east, I crossed over the Danube several times. Each bridge was different and was adorned with one or more saints that blessed the travelers on their journey.

Auf dem Weg nach Osten habe ich die Donau mehrmals überquert. Jede Brücke war anders und wurde mit einem Heiligen geschmückt, der die Reisende auf dem Weg gesegnet haben.

Früh am Morgen waren viele Enten, Schwäne und andere Tiere auf dem Fluss, die gefrühstückt haben.

The Danube between Weltenburg and Kehlheim

When I arrived in Kehlheim, the rain began to fall incessantly and I put up my tent during a lull in the storm around 11 a.m. in a small town called Poikam. All day long, the storm raged and dumped tons of water onto my tent. I went to sleep and enjoyed a long nap. After the nap, the storm had passed and the Danube became calm and smooth as glass.

Als ich in Kehlheim ankam, fing es an dauerhaft zu regnen. Ich bin bis Poikam weitergefahren, und als der Regen eine 30minutige Pause machte, habe ich mein Zelt aufgebaut. Den ganzen Tag tobte der Sturm und goss tonnenweise Wasser auf mein Zelt. In dem Zelt bin ich einfach eingeschlafen. Als ich aufwachte war der Sturm vorbei, und die Donau war glatt wie ein Spiegel.

The Steinerne Brücke -- the Stone Bridge -- is a landmark in Regensburg. It is the main bridge that crosses the Danube and a gathering place for many. As in most cities in Germany, the Cathedral on the south side of the bridge marks the center of the city.

Die Steinerne Brücke ist ein Wahrzeichen in Regensburg. Sie ist die Hauptbrücke, die die Donau überquert und auch ein Treffpunkt für viele. Wie in vielen Städten in Deutschland, der Dom auf der Südseite der Brücke ist die Stadtmitte.
