The Longest Ride - 2006

Last Update: 19 September 2010

Zurück zur Hauptseite!

At the end of March, 2006, I accepted early retirement and decided to take a relaxing bicycle trip around the perimeter of Germany. I started near Karlsruhe, where the Rhine River leaves the border of France, headed west, and then continued northward and clockwise around Germany. An especially interesting part of the trip was during my perimeter rides around the islands in the North Sea, the Baltic, and Lake Constance.

Most of the time, I slept in a tent – sometimes in a campsite and occasionally in the wilderness.

During the mid-trip break, I enjoyed a week as organizer and youth leader for a youth retreat with a group of teens from Erbach (Odenwald) in Cuxhaven and took a short vacation with my wife, Angela, in Helgoland. All tolled, I spent 153 days in the saddle and rode 8086 kilometers.

Daffodils in Dieburg

Week 1

16-22 April - This first week of the trip was exciting because I had an opportunity to say goodbye to friends and family After enjoying one last meal with them, I was on my own to prepare meals. I learned a lot about cooking on the trail during this first week. The most difficult task was organizing things into my panniers so that I could find them. Eventually, I ended up color-coding everything. The pannier with the yellow tape is the kitchen; purple is my wardrobe; red is my first aid kit, medicine and workshop; white is my office computer and rain gear. Even inside my wardrobe, I use colored plastic bags -- yellow for underwear, green for socks, white for long underwear, blue and white for biking jerseys and slacks, and so on. Other than experiencing a few cramps, it was a super first week.

Woche 1

Saarschleife - Saar River

Week 2

23-29 April - The second week was the most strenuous for me riding up and down many hills with all the weight on my bike. Eventually, I decided to send a few things back home. With all of the hills, there were many beautiful vistas and overlooks, like the one on the left where the Saar River makes a very large hairpin loop before continuing on north to flow into the Mosel River. It would have been easy to just follow a river all the way to the flat north, but I would have missed many breathtaking sites.

Woche 2

Oui, oui, monsieur!

Week 3

30 April - 6 May - At the end of the second week, my wife joined me for a few days of sightseeing in Echternach, Luxemburg. Unfortunately, the weather was rainy and cold. When the weather turned beautiful again, I headed northward into the Eifel where Spring had not yet arrived. I was surprised when I decended from the 600 meter highlands that all the leaves were on the trees and everything was blooming. Because of all the pollen, I decided to head to the North Sea where the air is clean as soon as possible.

Woche 3

30. April - 6.

Man with Dog ... or is it Dog with Man

Week 4

7-13 May - During this week, I was invited to join a lovely family for a meal of fresh asparagus and ham - a delightful experience. There were many water mills initially and the land became completely flat. As I continued northward, windmills became commonplace. Of course, windmills mean wind, which I love -- as long as it is at my back. The highlight of this week and of my entire trip was a tour of a biogas facility in Heede at the end of the week.

Woche 4

Salzwiese, Wangerooge

Week 5

13-20 May - This week my good friend, Robert, joined me as we headed quickly for the North Sea to the fresh air. This week had it’s ups and downs, but it seemed as though a guardian angel was looking after us. On our first day, I ran into a pole and bent the rim on my bike. Robert found a shop in a heartbeat, and even though it was closed, the owner agreed to sell me a new rim at less than retail and switched the tire to the new rim in a heartbeat. The blue bruise on my leg reminds me to take it easy. In a couple of days, we were already on Borkum, the first of the Islands in the North Sea. With beatiful weather, we found a great place to stay overnight and enjoyed the relaxed island lifestyle. We also visited Juist, a delightful island with horses, bikes and no cars. Wangerooge, left, was a very conservative but interesting island, with it’s bird breeding areas and salt meadows that fill and empty with the tide, like the one in this photograph. Wind and rain were common the last two days of this week. Brrrrr!

Woche 5

Brrrrr!

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence!

Week 6

21-27 May - This week was varied far from the original plan. I had planned to spend two days on each island enjoying the sunshine, but the weather was sometimes incredibly windy and stormy and the rain came in sheets of water. I called an old friend who lived 100 km to the south and learned that he was leaving for Munich in a couple of days, so I rode against the wind to see him. It was worth it. He showed me Bremen and zipped off to Munich. His lovely wife, Johanna, fixed a meal I will never forget and we spent many hours talking together and getting to know each other better. Their children, Benjamin and Luisa are very clever and fun to be around. After continuing on my way, around the coast, I ended up in the Dünenhof, a Christian retreat center near Cuxhaven, where I met Marco, a gentleman, who manages the group house and camping area. His team is topnotch.

Woche 6

Helgoland - Basstölpel in Flight

Week 7

28 May - 3 June - Basstölpel in Flight near the cliffs of Helgoland

This was a week of varied experiences and a lot of rain and wind. It started out with getting to know the Cuxhaven area better. Monday was spent on Helgoland. I was fascinated by this small island in the middle of the North Sea.

The highlight of the week was being allowed to meet Reidar Fischer’s family in Itzehoe. They invited me to enjoy a hot shower, a meal, and to stay overnight in a bed for the first time in a month. What a change after sleeping on an air mattress in a tent.

The most interesting conversation of the week was with a couple I met near St. Peter Ording. Click the picture to see them in this week’s group of pictures.

Woche 7

28. Mai - 3.

Kampen Beach, Sylt at Sunset

Week 8

4 - 10 June - This week took me across the top of Germany from the beautiful island paradise of Sylt to Oldenburg near the Island of Fehmarn.

After taking a ferry from Sylt to Romo, a Danish island, I zipped through Denmark to Flensburg and from there along the Flensburg Fjord down the coast to Eckernförde, Kiel, and Oldenburg (Holstein).

This was a facinating week of many encounters with interesting people with whom I enjoyed many interesting conversations, including a lawyer, a psychoanalyst, and a prince and his bride.

jClick the picture at the left for more details.

Woche 8

Shoreline near Timmendorf on the Island of Poel at Sunset

Week 9

11 - 17 June - After a couple of days, the worst happened. I had been noticing the lack of energy for a few days. In Travemünde, after a small accident, I lost consciousness in the afternoon heat and laid on the grass for an hour before waking up. As far as I know, no one came to see if I was alright, probably thinking I was drunk. Luckily, no one walked away with my bicycle that would have been easy to take.

I crossed the canal on the ferry into the former DDR later that afternoon and lost control of my bicycle while going down a hill. No, I wasn’t hurt, but I knew my energy was spent. I was so exhausted that I didn’t even look for a campground. I found a spot in a nearby woods and pitched my tent. The next morning, I learned it was in an NSG (national preservation area) - an illegal place to pitch a tent, but I could not have possibly gone any further.

It was the beginning of an infection that lasted for a week afterwards. The next day, I traveled through Wismar and onto the Island of Poel where I spent the night in a campground. The next six days, thanks to the benevolence of friends of the family, I was able to weather my illness in a comfortable apartment.

Woche 9

Eagle in the Jasmund National Park on the Island of Rügen

Week 10

18 - 24 June - What a fantastic week - a week that took me from a small island on the Baltic to one of the most beautiful areas in Germany -- the chalk cliffs in the National Park in Jasmund. After leaving Poel, I traveled north to Kühlungsborn, Heiligendamm, Warnemünde, Bad Doberan, Ahrenhoop, Prerow, Zingst, Strjalsünd, Hiddensee, Cape Arcona, and on to Sassnitz on the east side of Rügen.

While the rest of Germany was boiling in hot humid weather during the world championships for soccer, I was enjoying the cool temperatures along the Baltic Sea on the beaches, jungles, and the national park.

I took so many photographs, it was difficult to choose which would be the photos of the day. Since I plan to write my book about encounters, I tried to concentrate on the people I met. There were so many, it was difficult to keep the conversations apart. Two couples in particular were especially nice - Mr. and Mrs. Manz, and two doctors named Kamintz discussed some aspects of philosophy and their experiences in the areas I was visiting. I will remember them for a long time to come. Also, a bicycling enthusiast from Graz in Austria spent a couple of hours discussing his adventures with me.

This week ended with another kind of close encounter - a close encounter with nature. Click the picture for a couple of details.

Woche 10

Coastline near Sassnitz

Week 11

25 June - 1 July - This week was spent on the islands of Rügen and Usedom and ends with a sprint down the border to Poland. It is impossible to get further away from home within Germany, but from now on, I will be heading back that direction. Right now, I am riding south along the border to Poland. Some of the trails are brand new and smooth easy riding. Others are along tank tracks.

At the end of Week 12, I plan to return home for my mid-trip break. With luck, I’ll make it in time to watch the World Championship Soccer Match. Click the picture for more details.

Woche 11

Bastei near Dresden

Week 12

2-8 July - The spectacular picture on the left is a view of the Bastei on the Elbe River near Stadt Wählen south of Dresden. Hop on your bicycle in Dresden and head south along the Elbe. You can’t miss it.

This week started in beauty and ended in the hospital. After traveling along the Oder River, I headed south on the Neisse River at breakneck speed with stops in Bad Muskau, Stolpe, Forst, Eisenhüttenstadt, Guben, Görlitz, Zittau and Freiberg. Averaging 100 kilometers per day (easy along a river), I was eager to return home for my mid-trip break. I fell in love with Görlitz, a city that I think is the most beautiful in Europe, and saw some of the most spectacular sights of my trip, first in the Bohemian Forest in the Czech Republic, Little Switzerland in Saxon, and the wilderness of the forests west of Dresden -- a fantastic week.

After returning home for my mid-trip break, I rode to the barber on my bicycle for a haircut and crashed in a rainstorm - without a helmet. Concussion, several stitches on my head destroyed my new haircut, and pulled ligament in my shoulder.

I learned my lesson for good. If you have a helmet, wear it. If you don’t, buy one. In a couple weeks, I’ll be good as new. It’s time to lie on the beach for a few weeks.

Woche 12

O Weh!

Ich habe meine Lektion gelernt. Wenn Du einen Helm besitzt, trag ihn. Wenn nicht, kauf einen. In zwei Wochen geht’s mir wieder gut. Inzwischen werde ich am Strand liegen.

Kayaking on the Jagst

Mid-Trip Break

9 July - 6 August - Right now, I’m taking a break to visit my family and to strengthen my arms in my kayak. The trip continues on 7 August 2006.

After my crash on 7 July, this break was needed. A chiropractic doctor by the name of Lorraine Kemski has “magic hands” and was able to fix my twisted neck, back, and shoulder. She is absolutely talented. If you need a chiropractor or your back is out of whack, give her a call at 06151-4290700 for an appointment. Her address is Rehkopfweg 17, 64287 Darmstadt.

Pause

Youth in Flossenbürg

Week 13

7 - 12 August - Back on the road. What a great feeling it is to be riding the bike again - like an elixir - the medicine that makes me feel like I could do anything given the time to train .When I look over the landscape on a mountain pass after riding the bike to the top, I am awed by what has happened to the fat man I used to be.

This week started by followijng the Eisenweg (the iron trail) in Hennersdorf near Chemnitz in the Erzgebirge. I shouldn’t have been surprised to see that all the streams were clear but the stream beds were the color of rust from the amount of iron in the water. To shorten the trip by about 100 kilometers, I took a short cut through the Czech Republic from Kraslice to Cheb and from there into the Oberpfalz in Bavaria. What a radical change it was to see the young men dressed in Lederhosen and celebrating with the large Bavarian mugs in their hands.

One thing has become evident to me on this trip. Beer is for men the same as chocolate for the ladies - in Bavaria, it is the perfect ending to a successful day.

The countryside in this region is virtually unknown by those in the Odenwald where I live. Characteristic in this region are the steep rolling hills and the many castles on mountains of granite.

Woche 13

Week 14

13 - 19 August - I finally arrived in the Southeast. From this point, I will be heading toward home. The photo on the left is the famous Königsee (King Lake) in the mountains near Berchtesgaden.

This week took me from Eslarn on the border to the Czech Republic to the furthest point southeast in Germany on the Austrian border. On the first day of this week, the rain began to fall and preempted my planned route through the Bavarian Forest. As I began to climb the steep mountains near Fürth in the Bavarian Forest, the rain turned the street into a river and I decided to head south to meet a second cousin, Rudi Wandersleb, in Landshut. Great idea. Together, we pedalled up the Isar River and then down the Blue Danube to Passau. After Rudi went back home on the train, I rode alone through Salzburg to the Alps. No more easy riding. From now on, I will be riding up and down steep mountains.

Next week, my friend from Holland will be joining me in Austria conquer the steepest mountains in the Alps. Wish me luck.

Woche 14

Maurach Achensee in the Early Morning

Week 15

20 - 26 August - What a fantastic week! This was my first week in the mountains - the week that I feared the most because of the steep trails. That is where 6000 kilometers of training paid off. Except for a couple of super steep trails I was able to pedal to the top. The only real problem came on Wednesday, when I had to push my bike up the trail from Jenbach Austria to the Achensee (Achen Lake). Embarassing? Never! Even some of the professionals on their racing bikes hopped off and pushed up a section that was a 22% grade.

At first there was rain, and as usual in the mountains, the showers were off and on again. But what’s a little rain? When the sun came out, it was warm enough to swim.

The most beautiful view was of then beautifully green Ruhpolding Valley (click the picture) at the end of a long rainy day. Ruhpolding is famous for the winter triathlon center - a perfect place for cross-country skiing.

The next day, I was awed by the clearness of the Fördersee, an Alpine lake. It was so clear, I could see the trout swimming all the way to the bottom of the lake. Incredible.

Toward the end of the week, I zipped down the Inn River on the way to Innsbrück, Austria, then headed up the steep trail to the Aachensee, a beautiful mountain lake on the way to Bad Tölz, Germany.

Woche 15

Was eine Phantastische Woche!

Cows Blocking the Bike Path in the Allgäu

Week 16

26 August - 2 September - This week started out with absolutely beautiful weather as Robert and I started into the mountains, but at the end of the first day, the rains came down. No matter. We have good rain gear and every day there were always a few rainless hours. The rain starts at night and usually gets lighter by morning. On Monday we rode to the Schattwald Alpine Club house in Austria and spent a couple of days getting to know the other guests and exchanging stories about hiking and biking. Günther, Susan, Isabel and Lea shared our “Matratzenlager” and become good friends.

Wednesday, we hiked to the Wannenjoch and signed our names in the book at the mountain peak - a nice change of pace for the trip. Thursday, we headed for the Bodensee - Lake Constance, the second largest inland body of water in Europe that also includes an island with palm trees.

After sleeping at a campsite on Reichenau, an island with hundreds of greenhouses used for growing vegetables, Robert and I met his wife and daughter, Lisanne, in the town of Radolfzell. Before heading home, Robert and I went for a swim in Lake Constance in the town of Moos. (No, that’s not the sound a cow makes, it is pronounced like “moze”. ;-)

Woche 16

26. August - 2.

Sunrise on the Rhine River

Week 17

10-16 September - This week took me from the Bodensee (Lake Constance) to the Upper Rhine River.

The most spectacular view along the river was the waterfalls where the Rhine thunders downward over 100 feet in Schaffhausen Switzerland. Incredible.

In Breisach (left) on the Rhine River, a monastery towers over the city and the river that is so impressive, that many people from both France and Germany sunbathe on the island across from it to just enjoy the view. It is breathtaking to say the least.

I stayed on the ill de Rhin (The Isle of the Rhine) for two days and made a detour on the second day to Colmar in France. Colmar won the French flower award in 2002 and 2005 and is attempting to win it again this year. A beautiful city, Colmar is among the most visited cities in France. I will include several pictures from this city on the CD that accompanies my book so you can enjoy it too.

Woche 17

Mümlingtal - The Valley Where I Live

Week 18 - Last Week of the Trip

The final week of my trip was a very relaxing week with lots of sunshine and perfect weather. This week I took my time to swim in the Rhine and in a lake along the way home.

After traveling northward on the Rhine River, I spent a couple of days at a very beautiful lake in France where wild geese were mating. I met several people at the lake and used the opportunity to refresh my French and learn a few new words in that language.

Later in the week, I returned to Germany and celebrated with colleagues from the office where I used to work.

On Friday, I rode along the beautiful Neckar River and up the valley toward my home. My barber surprised me with a wonderful meal and cut my hair that had grown long during the trip.

The city of Beerfelden lies on top of a mountain to the south of my home and was the last steep hurdle before returning to the valley where I live. It was a thrill to see the view on the left as I descended down the valley to my home.

My son, Christian, accompanied me on this last leg of an 8000 kilometer journey. I can truly say now that I have learned to love this beautiful country
