Map Hamburg to Hessen

From Hamburg, I rode due South to Hanover, Göttingen, Fulda, to Büdingen to visit my cousin, then directly to my home south of Frankfurt.

Karlstein Wegweiser - In the middle of the forest, I came upon this rock.

P1240847

5-star camping is better than a 3-star hotel any day.

P1240849

Please allow me to show you this campsite.

It is the best I’ve ever seen anywhere in Europe.

All the tree-stumps in the campground have been carved into attractive animals.

The Owner’s Home ?   It was next to the campsite.

P1240867

Just as the rain began, I found this hut in the woods.

P1240871

No one in sight, so why not take a nap until the rain stops?

P1240872

In Obernjesa I saw a building with a map on it. Unusual!

P1240875

On the way south, I found this marker. It says “Here, Germany and Europe were separated until 18 Nov 1989 at 6 a.m.

It began to rain again when I saw this chapel at the top of the hill. This Linden tree provided some shelter, but not for long.

By some fluke, these two trees grew together. The smaller tree pushed upward breaking a limb and tearing it upward on the large tree. It is supposedly 1000 years old.

Crosses like this can be found all over Germany.

Bridges built by the Romans can be found all over Europe.

I took this picture on the side of a large building for my wife. She loves to spin wool and make her own sweaters. But this word has another meaning in German -  a Spnner is someone who acts crazy!

P1240927

My cousin, Philip, went for a spin with me before I headed home.

P1240928

Palace in Hanau - My wife and I attended a concert here.

Every bike tour should end with a sunset. The one on the right is at a restaurant called Gosch in Wenningen near the clinic where I spent 4 weeks in rehab for my lungs. As you can see, my lungs improved sufficiently for me to make another bike trip - 1000 km on the island of Sylt and another 680 kilometers back to my home.

P1240848

This is a petting zoo for the kids. Yes, of course, they can go into these huts built for both kids and animals alike.

The German legend above explains a different story. From the Middle Ages, monks were not allowed to own anything, so people brought them food and other provisions and placed them at the food of this oak tree. To protect the food from the weather, the monks pounded a box-shaped wedge into the oak tree above where the provisions were brought. Eventually, this twisted tree took its present form. It is known as the “Beggar’s Oak” .
