	10 - Romanian Border to Calafat

Romania - The Land of Unequalled Hospitality

I was not ready for the surprise that awaited me in Romania. When people saw me on the bike, they would wave and cars honked their horns. Perhaps it was the flags on the bike which I use for safety purposes, but what impressed me the most was the hospitality of the people in this wonderful country.

When I crossed the border to Romania, the Nera river which flowed into the Danube was at least 2 meters higher than normal. Also there were no more signs to mark the Danube Bicycle Trail. From this point on, I was forced to ride on highways with no signs to mark the way for cycle tourists.

Rumänien - Das Land der unschlagbare Gastfreundlichkeit

Ich war nicht vorbereitet auf die Überraschung, die mich in Rumänien erwartete. Als die Leute mich auf meinem Wanderrad sahen, haben sie gewunken und die Autos haben endlos gehupt. Vielleicht waren es die Fahnen auf dem Rad, die ich aus Sicherheitsgründen fliegen lasse. Aber was mich am meisten beeindruckt hatte war die Gastfreundlichkeit von den Menschen in diesem schönen Land.

Als ich die Grenze nach Rumänien überquerte, der Fluss, der in die Donau hineinfliess war mindestens 2 Meter höher wie sonst. Es gab auch keine Fahrrad Wegweiser mehr für den Donauradweg. Ab hier wurde ich gezwungen nur auf Strassen zusammen mit den Autos und LKWs zu fahren.

Nera River

I entered Romania at Naidas and rode toward the Danube on the Nera River. It is normally a small stream, but it had overflowed its banks and filled the entire valley.

The people in this region were quite poor. Many of them in this region were dark-skinned, possibly of indian descent, and had settled into small villages in the far west of Romania. In this region, the churches were small and simple.

I ging über die Grenze nach Romania bei Naidas und radelte Richtung Donau an der Nera Fluss. Normalerweise, ist die Nera einen Bach, aber sie war geschwollen und füllte das ganze Tal.

Die Leute in dieser Region waren ziemlich arm. Viele waren dunkelhäutig, vielleicht von indischer Abstammung, und leben in kleineren Dörfern im Westen Rumäniens. In dieser Region waren die Kirchen klein und einfach.

After 3 days of rainy spells and sleeping in various places in the wilderness with no sanitary facilities, I decided to stop here at this boarding house where I could get a good shower and sleep in a real bed for the night. The view from Terrace was stunning. The price was good at 17 Euros, but some of the things I expected were lacking. The shower was very weak with an old shower head that barely trickled water. The owner was very happy to tell me they have Internet, but it was slow. The TV controllers didn’t work properly, but I didn’t want to watch TV anyway. The doors were locked with old skeleton-type keys – very insecure. The waller (pike perch) was oily but delicious. The people were very friendly and helped me learn a few words in Romanian. Most importantly, it was a dry place where I could relax. .

Nach 3 Tagen mit Regenschauer und Schlafplätze im Wildnis ohne Duschen habe ich entschieden bei dieser Pension zu übernachten. Die Aussicht hier war sehr schön. Mit 17 € war der Preis OK, aber einiges war mangelhaft. Die Dusche hier war schwach mit einem alten rostigen Duschkopf der Wasser kaum durchgelassen hatte. Der Besitzer war glücklich als er gesagt hatte, dass sie Internet haben, aber es war sehr langsam. Der TV Bedienung funktionierte nicht. Ich wollte sowieso nicht fernsehen. Die Türen waren mit einem alten Skelettschlüssel abgeschlossen – sehr unsicher. Der Fisch war ölig aber lecker. Aber das Bett war trocken. Die Leute waren sehr freundlich und haben mir geholfen, ein .paar Wörter auf Rumänisch zu lernen. Am wichtigsten, war die Pension ein trockener Ort, wo ich mich ausruhen konnte.

		Discovering new friendships is half the fun of cycle touring. Bogdan and Laici (left) were on a weekend tour when I met them. We enjoyed a great time of fun together and the friendship developed into additional days together in Bucarest and then, at the end of my tour, in Vama Veche on the Black Sea.

	Neue Freundschaften zu entdecken ist mehr als die Hälfte der Spass vom Radwandern. Bogdan und Laici waren auf einer Wochenendtour als ich sie getroffen habe. Wir hatten viel Spass zusammen und die Freundschaft hat sich weiterentwickelt in zusätzliche Tage zusammen in Bukarest und dann, am Ende meiner Tour, in Vama Veche am Schwarzen Meer.

The Iron Gates

(Romanian: Porţile de Fier) is a gorge on the Danube River. It forms part of the boundary between Romania and Serbia. In the broad sense it encompasses a route of 134 km (83 mi); in the narrow sense it only encompasses the last barrier on this route, just beyond the Romanian city of Orşova and includes 2 hydroelectric dams.

The gorge lies between Romania in the north and Serbia in the south. At this point, the river separates the southern Carpathian Mountains from the northwestern foothills of the Balkan Mountains. The name "Iron Gates" is used to name the entire range of gorges.

Das Eiserne Tor (rum. Porțile de Fier) ist ein Durchbruchstal an der Donau. Es liegt in den südlichen Karpaten (zwischen dem Serbischen Erzgebirge und dem Banater Gebirge) an der Grenze von Rumänien zu Serbien. Bis zu seiner Entschärfung 1972 im Zusammenhang mit dem Kraftwerk Eisernes Tor 1 galt es als der für die Schifffahrt gefährlichste Flussabschnitt der Donau, der nicht ohne ortskundige Lotsen passiert werden konnte. Das Eiserne Tor gilt als einer der imposantesten Taldurchbrüche Europas. Am Cazan bzw. Kazan (dt. Kessel) zwischen den Städten Orșova und Donji Milanovac, wird die Anstauung der Donau auf 200 Meter Breite und 80 Meter Tiefe reduziert.

Near Dubova, the Danube became very narrow, only 200 meters across at the narrowest point.

The widest point on the Danube is 6,5 kilometers - far downstream.

Decebalus Rex - Iron Gate Region

The Statue of Dacian king Decebalus is a 40-m high statue that is the tallest rock sculpture in Europe. It is located on the Danube's rocky bank, near the city of Orşova, Romania.

The idea belonged to Romanian businessman and historian Iosif Constantin Drăgan and it took 10 years (1994–2004) for twelve sculptors to finish it, at a cost of over one million dollars.

Right in front of the statue, but on the Serbian shore facing Romania, there is an ancient memorial plaque (Tabula Traiana) commemorating the victories of the Roman Empire over the Dacian kingdom in 105.

Under the face of Decebalus there is a Latin inscription which reads "DECEBALUS REX—DRAGAN FECIT" ("King Decebal—Made by Drăgan").

Die Statue des Dakerkönigs Decebalus ist eine 40 Meter hohe Statue und zugleich die höchste Felsskulptur in Europa. Sie befindet sich an einer Felsformation am Donauufer bei der Ortschaft Dubova südwestlich der Stadt Orșova (Rumänien) im „Naturpark Eisernes Tor“ (Parcul Natural Porțile de Fier).

Die Idee stammt von dem rumänischen Geschäftsmann und Historiker Iosif Constantin Drăgan. Mit dem Projekt waren insgesamt zwölf Bildhauer beschäftigt, die Fertigstellung dauerte zehn Jahre (1994-2004) und am Ende kostete es über eine Million US-Dollar.

Östlich der Statue, und somit auf der serbischen Uferseite, befindet sich die Tabula Traiana (deutsch Tafel des Traian), eine in den Fels des Eisernen Tors gemeißelte, dem römischen Kaiser Trajan gewidmete Inschrift.

Unter dem Gesicht von Decebal befindet sich die lateinische Inschrift „DECEBAL REX - DRAGAN FECIT“ („König Decebal - Erbaut von Drăgan“).

		Well near Simian

			This night, I found a place in the edge of the woods to put up my tent. The lookout was fantastic. Both yesterday and today, the 5 flags were a blessing. I was able to communicate in all 5 languages both days. The Romanians explained to me that just after the revolution, they were offered jobs in France, Italy, Spain and Germany. Many Romanians stayed there between 3 and 5 years and then returned home with sufficient money to support their families and help rebuild after communism. Just today, I entered a village where everyone spoke Spanish – including Marius (see photo). In another village, they spoke Italian – in another French – and so on. The schools tend to teach the language where the families went to work. Very interesting for me. From a group of 5 men, I could normally converse with at least one, who then translated for the others.

	Diese Nacht, hatte ich einen Platz am Waldesrande, wo ich mein Zelt aufbauen konnte. Die Aussicht war fantastisch. Gestern und heute waren die 5 Fahnen einen Segen. Kommunizieren musste ich in allen 5 Sprachen. Die Rumänen hatten mir erklärt, dass nach der Revolution haben sie Angebote in Frankreich, Spanien und Italien zu arbeiten. Viele haben dort 3 bis 6 Jahre lang gearbeitet und kamen dann wieder nach Hause mit genug Geld um wieder aufzubauen. Heute bin ich in ein Dorf gegangen, wo jeder Spanisch konnte - auch Marius (siehe Foto). In einem anderen Dorf konnte sie Italienisch; in einem anderen, Französisch. Die Schulen tendierten die Sprachen zu lehren, wo die Familien früher gearbeitet hatten. Für mich war es sehr interessant. Von 5 Leuten, konnte ich mit mindestens einem kommunizieren, der dann für die anderen gedolmetscht hat.

		Perhaps it should be embarrassing for me to tell this story, but Bogdan, Laici and I enjoyed the evening telling jokes and talking about our adventures. They pulled out a jug with some interesting liquid in it that was 24 years old. It tasted wonderful, but as we continued our conversations through the evening, I noticed that I was beginning to slur my words. You know the rest of the story. I woke up with a slight headache the next morning, but our friendship was sealed. And it was fun!!!

		Vielleicht sollte es peinlich für mich sein, diese Geschichte zu erzählen, aber Bogdan, Laici und ich haben den Abend völlig genossen. Wir haben Witze erzählt und unsere Abenteuern ausführlich besprochen. Irgendwann habe ich gemerkt, dass ich nicht mehr richtig sprechen konnte. Du kennst den Rest der Geschichte. Am nächsten Morgen bin ich mit einem Kater aufgewacht, aber unsere Freundschaft war versiegelt. Und es hat Spaß gemacht!

	This hydroelectric dam is one of two after the Iron Gates. From this point on, the road became relatively flat all the way to the Black Sea.

Gypsy Children

When I stopped along the road, 12 gypsy children came out and wanted to talk with me. We had fun trying to communicate with hands and feet. The best we could do was to learn each others’ names and a few other words. They taught me to count in Romanian, and I taught them to count to 20 in English. They were delighted when I showed them a slight of hand trick.

Als ich an der Strasse hielt, kamen 12 Zigeuner Kinder heraus und wollten mit mir reden. Wir hatten Spass als wir versucht hatten mit Händen und Füssen zu reden. Zum Schluss konnten wir alle Namen und von 1 bis 20 zählen in Englisch und Rumänisch. Sie waren entzückt als ich ihnen gezeigt hatte wie eine Münze aus der Hand verschwinden konnte.
