	Seniorendorf - Village for the Elderly

		A Work of LOVE!

By choice, Pater Domingos Monteiro da Costa took an oath to remain poor and devoted his life to help the poor and needy. He started with a prayer, perhaps many prayers, and asked for a sign from God to help fulfill his dream. When the sign appeared, his organization was given 20 acres of land in a beautiful area on the southern coast of Portugal. Donations came from all over Europe to help him build a home for the elderly with 120 occupants, a kindergarten with 70 children, a nursery with 50 babies, a chapel, and facilities, to include a large cafeteria, laundry, gardening shop, and everything needed to turn it into a fully operative village. Pater Da Costa smiles as he views the the landscape from the terrace on top of the administrative building where the kindergarten and nursery are located. The expensive mansion villa on the hill in the background which belongs to a German family is surrounded by cypress trees. The local people chuckle when they see the many villas built by foreigners that are surrounded by cypress trees, because, in Portugal, cypress trees are planted only in a cemetery.

	Es war seine eigene Entscheidung arm zu bleiben, um Leute zu helfen, die arm sind. Angefangen hat Pater Domingos Monteiro da Costa mit einem Gebet, vielleicht viele Gebete, und er bat Gott um ein Zeichen, dass er sein Traum verwirklichen sollte. Als das Zeichen erschien, wurde ein Grundstück von 8 Hecktare in einer schöner Gegend auf der Südküste Portugals seiner Organisation geschenkt, um die Arbeit anzufangen. Geld kam von überall in Europa, um ihm mit seinen Ideen zu helfen. Er hat ein Seniorendorf für 120 Einwohner gebaut, ein Kindergarten mit 70 Kinder und 50 Babys, eine Kapelle, und andere Einrichtungen, z.B. eine grosse Küche und Esshalle, Reinigungsräume, Gartenanlage, und alles was man braucht um seine Idee in ein funktionierendes Dorf zu verwandeln. Pater Da Costa lächelt als er blickt auf die Landschaft von seiner Terrasse auf dem Dach des Management Gebäude, wo der Kindergarten ist. Das teure Villa auf dem Hügel im Hintergrund, das einer deutschen Familie gehört, ist umringt von Zypressen. Die Leute im Dorf schmunzeln wenn sie die vielen von Ausländern gebauten Villas mit Zypressenbäume sehen, weil in Portugal werden Zypressen nur am Friedhof gepflanzt.

From the other side of the terrace, you can see two groups of curved structures that form two large circles. They contain individual apartments that all face attractive courtyards in the center. On the day I visited, all of the doors were open and the people were either sitting in front of their apartments or in the courtyard conversing with the others.

Auf der andere Seite der Terrasse, sieht man mehrere halbrunde Gebäuden die zwei grosse Kreise formen, die attraktive Höfe in der Mitte haben. Diese haben einzelne Wohnungen, die ihre Türen Richtung Hof aufgehen. An dem Tag als ich den Altersheim besucht habe, waren alle Türen auf und die Leute sassen vor ihrer Wohnungen oder waren im Hof mit andere Bewohner des Seniorendorfes.

	Many of the people here were over 90 years old. If I ever live to be that old, this kind of life beats the normal homes for the elderly. A bust of the person who donated the land is in the middle of this ring of apartments. There are two such rings. Viele hier sind über 90. Wenn ich jemals so alt werde, und für mich nicht mehr sorgen kann, würde ich auch gern in einem solchen Heim leben. Der Mann, der das Land gewidmet hat, wird in der Mitte dieses Hofs geehrt. Es gibt zwei solche Ringe.

When Pater Da Costa walks into a room, the children all chant a greeting and run up to him to give him a hug.

Wenn Pater Da Costa ein Zimmer betritt, fangen die Kinder an ihn laut zu begrüssen und ihn zu umarmen.

Outdoor church service. Over 400 people came to worship during this gathering. The choir is singing on the stage in this photo. Once they had all gathered, the people walked up the hill to the church where the service was held in the church courtyard - the center of the village.

Gottesdienst draussen. Über 400 Leute kamen zu dieser Versammlung. Vorne singt der Chor. Nachdem sie alle zusammen war gingen sie den Hügel hinauf, wo Gottesdienst im Kirchhof gehalten würde - mittem im Dorf.

In reference to Christ’s first miracle of turning water into wine, a large banner hangs over the entrance to the church courtyard, that contains words from a verse in John 2:5 where Mary, the mother of Jesus said to her servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

In Bezug auf Christus erste Wunder, Wasser in Wein zu wandeln, hängt ein grosses Schild über den Einang zum Kirchenhof. Darauf sind Wörter aus Johannes 2:5, wo Maria, die Mutter von Jesus sagt zu den Dienern, “Tue was er euch sagt.”

After the church service, the people walked 5 kilometers to the village for the elderly and kindergarten in Alcalar, where they enjoyed a bit of food and fun together. In the photograph on the left are some people who dressed up like biblical figures. On the right, a lady dressed in her native costume from Africa. Since Angola at one time belonged to Portugal, many Angolans move to Portugal for education and employment.

Nach dem Gottesdienst sind die Leute 5 kilometer gelaufen zu dem Altersdorf und Kindergarten, wo sie zusammen gegessen haben und etwas Spass miteinander hatten. Im Foto hier haben einige sich als Leute aus der Bibel gekleidet. Rechts ist eine Dame aus Afrika in ihrer feierliche Kostum. Weil Angola mal Portugal gehört hatte, kommen viele aus Angola zu lernen und zu arbeiten.

No worry, there are hundreds of people that speak English in the area - mostly people from England that enjoy the warmer climate
