The Portuguese take Mardi Gras seriously and dress up in the most colorful costumes I’v ever seen. In the schools, the children celebrate as well, and there are other events, such as sky diving contests, roller blading and cycling races, and nearly everything else you can imagine. Since the climate is relatively warm in February, the people turn out in droves anytime a loudspeaker fills the air to announce that something is going on. Die Portugiesen nehmen Fasching ganz ernst und bekleiden sich in sehr vielen farbigen Kostüme. In den Schulen feiern auch die Kinder, und es gibt auch andere Veranstaltungen, z.B. Skydiving, Inlineskating, Radrennen, und fast alles, was Du dir denken kannst. Weil das Klima relativ warm in Februar ist, die Leute kommen in Massen jedes mal wenn ein Lautsprecher irgendwas von sich gibt. |

On “Fat Tuesday” I decided to visit Odiaxere near Lagos for the Mardi Gras parade. I expected a long parade with entrants from all over the region. That’s not what it turned out to be, but I wasn’t disappointed. Normally, a parade goes from Point A to Point B, and that’s the end of it. Not here. The participants traveled around a triangular route in the city and the same theme would show up again and again. Occasionally, a new float would join the parade and add something new to the craziest merry-go-round parade I’ve ever seen. The explanation -- they only do it once a year, so they want to make the most of it. Am Fasching Dienstag, bin ich nach Odiaxere geradelt für den Umzug. Ich habe einen grossen Umzug erwartet mit vielen Teilnehmern von überall in der Region. Das ist nicht passiert, aber ich war nicht enttäuscht. Normalerweise, geht ein Umzug von Punkt A bis Punkt B, und das war’s. Nicht hier. Die Teilnehmer sind um eine dreieckige Route in der Stadt rumgefahren, und das mehrmals. Ab und zu kam etwas neues dazu und mehr zum verrücktesten Umzug der Welt beitragen. Warum? Sie machen’s nur einmal im Jahr und sie wollen das Beste daraus machen. |
