Less than 2 hours by plane from Germany, Mallorca, jokingly referred to as Germany’s 17th State, is a breathtakingly beautiful island off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. Although Mallorquin, a language that contains elements of Spanish, French and Portuguese, is the official language, about
70% of the population speaks German. Most speak some English, so people from all over Europe flock to this sunny island to enjoy the comfortably warm ocean climate. For me, it was a chance to escape the high-pollen season in Germany and enjoy 11 days of sport touring on the bicycle.

Weniger als 2 Stunden von Deutschland entfernt, Mallorca, manchmal Deutschlands 17. Bundesland genannt, ist eine wunderschöne Insel nicht weit von der spanischen Küste im Mittelmeer. Obwohl Mallorquin, die offizielle Sprache ist, eine Sprache die Elemente von Spanisch, Französisch und Portugiesisch enthält, etwa 70% der Bevölkerung spricht Deutsch. Die meisten können etwas Englisch; daher strömen Leute von ganz Europa auf diese sonnige Insel, um das bequeme warme Meeresklima zu geniessen. Für mich war es eine Chance den Hochsaison für Pollen in Deutschland zu entfliehen, und 11 Tage Radwandern zu geniessen.

Sobald man die Hauptstadt von Palma verlässt, findet man sogar eine Wüste an der Südküste, wie in diesen Fotos.

As you can see, not all roads in Mallorca are made for cycling with a racing bike. This road took me over the mountain from Cala Mesquida, a beautiful beach in the northeast corner of Malorca, to Torre d'Albarca, a treacherous trail with many rocks and cactuses, and on to a beautiful empty beach on the Mediterranean Sea.

Wie Du siehst, sind nicht alle Strassen auf Mallorca für Rennräder gemacht. Diese Strasse hat mich über den Berg von Cala Mesquida geführt, nach Torre d'Albarca. Es war ein gefährlicher Weg mit vielen Steinen und Kaktussen, der zu einem sehr schönen leeren Strand am Mittelmeer führte.

About two months ago, I decided to look into geochaching - a kind of international treasure hunt using the hand-held GPS. This activity has grown rapidly during the past 2 years. There are approximately 800,000 geocaches worldwide. To learn more about it, go to www.geocaching.com In the photograph on the left, you can see an official geocache near the Torre de s’Estalella that I looked for and found while hiking along the coast.

Vor etwa 2 Monate, habe ich entschieden, mich über Geocaching zu informieren. Es ist eine Art internationale Schatzsuche mit Hilfe der mobile GPS. Diese Aktivität ist in den letzten 2 Jahren rapid gewachsen. Es gibt etwa 800,000 Geochaches in der Welt versteckt. From a cultural aspect, I found the varied architecture very interesting as well as the festivities in and around the city of Pollenca.

High atop a mountain near Pollenca was a monastery - Puig de Maria. A storm was brewing when I arrived there, so I asked if they had a room for the night - since there were no longer monks living there. “Of course, you can have the small room down by the lookout” was the reply.

Hoch auf dem Berg in der Nähe von Pollenca, ist ein Kloster - Puig de Maria. Ein Sturm war unterwegs als ich da ankam. Daher, habe ich gefragt, ob sie vielleicht ein Zimmer für die Nacht frei hätten. Weil keine Mönche mehr da waren (ausser einem) haben sie gesagt, “Natürlich! Sie können ein kleines Zimmerchen da unten beim Aussicht haben.”

About 7 kilometers from Pollenca is Cala Sant Vincent, a scenic town on the north coast of Mallorca. The turquoise blue water looked very inviting. Yes, I did swim while I was there, even in Apri when the water is only about 68 degrees F.

Etwa 7 Km von Pollenca ist Cala Sant Vincent, ein schönes Dorf an der Nordküste von Mallorca. Das türkisfarbene Wasser war sehr einladend. Ja, ich habe geschwommen auch wenn das Wasser in April nur 18 Grad C war.
